Who Was John Murray II?

John Murray II was named after his father John Murray I, who originally started the publishing company in 1768. Although they shared the same name, John Murray II was much more personable than his father, who had the reputation of a brutish Scotsman. John Murray II is famous for his publications of authors such as Byron, Coleridge, Charles Darwin, and Jane Austen. He is well known for his turbulent relationships with Lord Byron. Specifically, he was concerned about publishing Byron’s more scandalous works, and even went so far as to burn his memories, as they contained content regarding anal intercourse and sexual relations with his half-sister.
