Originally titled “The Vampyre; A Tale by Lord Byron”, this piece was published in New Monthly Magazine in April of 1819. (Found via the British Library) It was mistaken for Lord Byron’s work, but later was correctly attributed to John Polidori. The first edition is interesting because it is written in two columns, and published with other works that vary in form. There is not a lot of blank space within the pages, and there appears to be a lot of black smudges on the page. By reading it in the context of other short stories published in the magazine, it may have not stood out had Lord Byron’s name not been attached to the story. Readers might have had a different experience reading the first edition through the magazine, as opposed to it being published as a stand alone text.
